Aspiring to Include is the latest website to join our careers network. It is part of the Diverse Careers hub and is dedicated to changing the world of work for the better. By assisting employers on their journey to greater inclusivity, and supporting jobseekers to overcome any barriers they may face to a successful, safe and meaningful career, we will help to create more equality and acceptance in the workplace.
We went about creating this website because we believe that everybody deserves to fulfil their career potential. The global pandemic caused by Covid-19 highlighted some of the immense challenges faced by those least accepted and included by society to reach this potential. Those who face discrimination, prejudice, and stereotyping have many barriers to overcome when searching for and securing employment or education opportunities. Aspiring to Include is a practical guide and resource hub which tackles these barriers head-on. It does so by equipping job seekers with the information, tools and confidence to overcome challenges such as discrimination and rejection and find a career that’s right for them.
This website uses the protected characteristics outlined in the 2010 Equality Act as a guide to understanding who faces discrimination in our society. From these characteristics, we were able to determine which identities and groups of people are the least represented in the workplace, and need the most support. This information then formed our user groups:
- Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) LGBTQ+
- Migrants and Refugees
- Faith and Religion
- Socioeconomic backgrounds
Some of these focus on a particular group of people who face discrimination in the workplace, such as BAME people or women. Whereas others focus on a characteristic or factor that can influence how an employee might be treated, such as faith and religion or socioeconomic background.
Aspiring to Include is also a space for employers. By joining our network, we can support employers to reach their goal of diversity and inclusion. Now more than ever, organisations and employers are being held to account for the role they play in supporting disadvantaged and underrepresented employees.
We recognise that to tackle workplace, and societal inequality, those with the power need to set a new standard and practice for inclusion. We believe that some small and meaningful changes to workplace culture and attitudes will have a significant impact on job seekers and employees. Our guides will help employers to find and implement those changes within their workplace. This website will introduce employers to the concepts of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), and why they matter so much in the workplace.
We have tailored our support to help employers navigate and implement diversity and equality in each area of work and business. Amongst other things, our information will encourage employers to rethink their recruitment process, to tackle their unconscious biases, to use gender-neutral language, to actively create an inclusive office atmosphere, and to publish their EDI figures.
As well as useful resources for employers and employees, Aspiring to Include’s jobs board will be a practical solution to diversity and inclusion. Employers can show their dedication to EDI by joining our network, and knowing that they are showcasing their jobs to a broad and diverse job seekers pool. And job seekers and employees can trust that all employers they see on our site are committed to creating equal opportunities and an accessible workplace for all.
